Friends of Whatipu (FOW) is a group of about 75 people who have knowledge of and links with the Whatipu area and have resolved to act as guardians of the area, helping to preserve its special character, and where possible assist the Auckland Council.

Whatipu wetlands, beach and dunes is a 'scientific reserve". The landscape is one of the most outstanding natural areas of the Auckland region.

FOW have an annual tree planting (July), beach cleanup (October), seed collecting and stay at Whatipu Lodge (summer). FOW also manage a shorebird programme helping to re-establish vulnerable birds, such as the NZ Dotterel, Variable Oyster Catcher, Bittern, Fernbird and others. One member’s bird count is 51 species. FOW usually manage another community event at Whatipu once a year.

FOW have been incorporated since 2002.

2 or 3 newsletters are produced each year.
