Ecosystem:
The Manawa Karioi Restoration Project is on land that is part of Tapu Te Ranga Marae, established by Bruce Stewart in 1974.

Bruce’s vision for the Marae included a “bush and bird reserve” and the adjoining Home of Compassion made the Project land available to the Marae so that it could become such a reserve.

The Manawa Karioi Society Incorporated was formed in 1990 to manage the project and the first seedlings were planted in 1991.

Now, 25 years later, much of the site is covered in native bush with the abundance and diversity of native plants and animals continuing to increase.
