Ecosystem:

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a mainland ecological island located in the North Island of New Zealand. Surrounded by the world’s longest pest-proof fence, Sanctuary Mountain’s ancient forest offers a sanctuary for populations of many of our most endangered species – from birds to bats, frogs to reptiles, tuatara to giant weta.

With the erection of our fence complete and mammalian pests eradicated, our focus now turns to the following areas:

  • Monitoring the mountain to ensure our predator-free environment stays that way;

  • The continued restoration of the forest and wetlands areas.

  • Further reintroduction of indigenous species. The most recent being the songbird kokako.

  • The implementation of a visitor strategy with the goal of becoming a sustainable enterprise that ensures the longevity of the project.
