History of Friends of Okura Bush

Friends of Okura Bush took over the East Coast Bays Coastal Protection Society (which instigated the Long Bay Marine Reserve) in 2013.

We are a community group who are looking after 116ha of DoC land as well as quite  lot of surrounding Council land. This is coastal land bordering on the Long Bay Okura Marine Reserve.

It is the last vestige of coastal broadleaf and Taraire forest on the East Coast of Auckland.

Bringing back the biodiversity, every which way we can!

There are lots of pests that have been left to their own devices for many years....not any more!!!!

Pests:

# People...our biggest challenge!!!

Encroaching development with high powered lawyers and the new Auckland Unitary Plan seeming to favour developers because they have the finances to back up their claims.

Kauri health has been failing and it is majorly URGENT that we get the 36000 people per year that use the metal track, compressing the Kauri roots, onto a boardwalk ASAP. All these people need to be informed how to clean their gear before entering and after leaving the infected area. The cleaning stations are inadequate and urgently need to be upgraded.

# Rats, Mice, Mustelids...Ka Mate traps made from aluminium, are placed vertical on a tree or post give us a quick dead kill, Snap Es are placed in rat tunnels to prevent by kill and DoC 200's are used.

No poisons...so no threat of by killing moreporks or hawks!

# Noxious plants....ongoing weedbusting days and some planting.
