History of "Mudlarks"
In 2009 a group of volunteers and the then Franklin District Council Reps got together and started making Waiuku wharf accessible as mangroves were hemming it in. The group devised a unique methods of mangrove removal with minimal damage to ecosystem, leaving bare tidal flats as was up to 40 years ago. Now incorporated as a Trust, and operating under a 75ha, 30 year consent obtained and held by Auckland City Council.
