History of Places for Penguins

2007 – Places for Penguins was established by Wellington Forest & Bird

2008 – Planting began at Tarakena Bay. 20 nest boxes were installed at Tarakena Bay

2009 – Planting ongoing at Tarakena Bay. A trapline was established to target rats and mustelids.

2010 – Planting ongoing at Tarakena Bay, with support from GWRC. 100 new nest boxes were installed from Island Bay to Karaka with support from Wellington Zoo. Bait stations were established in the land above Tarakena Bay. Monitoring of nest boxes showed 10% use for the nesting season with 100% fledgling success.
