History of Trentham Ecological Restoration Project

Physical restoration worked commenced in the 10/11 financial year. Initial focus was on the Sommerville Wetland, where gorse and pines have been cleared and replaced with manuka, carex and other native species, but lately a lot of work has been done on Heretaunga Drain between Freyberg and Galliploi Roads, were sedges have been planted on the banks, and large shade species outside the flood channel.

Animal pests including goats, possums, rabbits and hares were controlled prior to planting.

Seeds sourced from the wetland have been reared with the help of Forest & Bird.

We are still new to this type of work, but are enjoying learning as we go.
