History of Wairaurahiri Jet

We opperate a jet boat on Lake Hauroko and the wild Wairaurahiri River in Southern Fiordland since 1994. As we are also guide/ interpreters, we pass on to our guests what we know of the area. In the last few years it has been apparent to us the degradation of flora and fauna in this otherwise pristine area. So in order to help in some small way, we thought of the idea of getting our clients on our trips to help. Since 2006 were we started with 10 stoat /rat traps we now have around 300 working down the river and on the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track and 30 km's of the South Coast Track. The traps are single Doc 150's in woodern boxes. They are mainly sponsored by our clients who pay an added fee on top of their Jet boat adventure. The maintance and checking is carried out on Lake Hauroko and the Wairaurahiri by boat as we do trips, The track traps mostly by ourselves with help from Hump Track staff, volunteers and friends. Kill numbers are published on our web site so sponsors can follow their traps catch rate. We are lucky enough to have won some environmental awards for our efforts. To date we have killed over 1000 stoats and 600 rats.
