2017 Lizard Monitoring will commence in February 2017

We are ready to go!  Would you like to join us?

  • In December 2016 we identified focus areas for our projects in Queen Elizabeth Park, Whareroa Farm and the Paekakariki Escarpment.  We dug pitfall traps (plastic buckets with lids) into the ground and placed sheets of onduline over them to provide habitat for lizards.
  • During February,  March and April 2017 we will monitor these traps over a period of up to 5 days by opening the lids and baiting the traps with yummy tinned pear and a piece of damp sponge.  The traps are checked each day for captured skinks or gecko and the data recorded.
  • Each day there will be a person trained in handling the lizards present and another person is required to help with photographing and recording any lizards found in the traps. If you are interested even for just a day, please let us know.

Monitoring of Traps in Queen Elizabeth Park

Daily from Friday 17 February – Tuesday 21 February – approx. 2 hrs each morning

We will meet at 9.30am at the northern cycleway entrance to Queen Elizabeth Park, on Poplar Avenue.  There are two sets of 10 traps in this northern end of the Park to check each day.

Monitoring of Traps on the Paekakariki Escarpment

The monitoring on the Paekakariki Escarpment will be more challenging as the traps are on the steep escarpment face.  For this area we need people with a high level of fitness.  This is serious lizard hunting!!

Monitoring on the Escarpment will commence on Thursday 30 March.

The plan for the Escarpment work is as follows:

Thursday 30 March – open and bait traps early evening (exact time to be advised)

Friday 31st March and Saturday 1 April - Monitor traps commencing 9 am (2 – 2.5 hours)

Sunday 2 April – Monitor again and close traps

Repeat above pattern the following week:

Thursday 6 April – open and bait traps early evening (exact time to be advised)

Friday 7 April and Saturday  8 April - Monitor traps commencing 9 am (2 – 2.5 hours)

Sunday 9 April – Monitor again and close traps

Spotlighting in Whareroa Farm Reserve

One exciting evening looking for nocturnal lizards!

Tuesday 14 February 9pm – 11.30pm.  Meet at Whareroa Farm Carpark

Eco Gecko Consultants will lead us in a night time hunt for nocturnal lizards.

Spotlighting involves holding a torch at eye-level (or looking along the beam of a head-torch), and looking for the reflection of a lizard’s eyes (called eyeshine), or looking for their pale belly up in the trees or in shrubs.

Spotlighting takes a lot of patience, and there is the possibility that no lizards may be found.

You will need to bring a bright torch or head torch and spare batteries; warm clothes and sturdy footwear.  Bookings essential for this one.
