Friends of Baring Head Charitable Trust
The Trust was established to be the leading contributor to the protection, enhancement and public enjoyment of Baring Head and its environs, and to assist the Greater Wellington Regional Council in its stewardship of the area.
Projects underway include small mammal monitoring, weed control, replanting, predator control and the protection of a banded dotterel colony. Have agreed a ten year biodversity action plan with the Council to protect the existing biodiversity values, restore communities of native flora and fauna and protect and enhance the biodiversity values of the lower Wainuiomata River. Received funding of $92,000 from the Community Conservation Partnership Fund for the first three years of the plan. Have also begun servicing predator traps on a neighbouring property to provide a buffer.
Has also restored an historic pumphouse and provided seating and picnic tables for visitors. Also discussion restoration and reuse of lighthouse compound and an interpretation strategy with the Council.
