Initial Weeding Day
We spent the afternoon of the hottest Wellington day of the summer weeding and and rubbish collecting from a portion of our restoration plot.
We were joined by some members of the VUW Tramping Club, the Resident's Association for the neighbourhood, two council rangers, and a couple of extras from various places.
While the keen weeders got amongst the banks of wandering willy, and the park ranger got to taking down a buddleia tree, the rest of us started lugging bucket fulls of mulch up some stairs from the driveway to the park. We all decided that we didn't need to do our daily workout after that.
When the truck was finally empty, and we had made a pile of mulch in the park, we took a well deserved break with the snacks Rob kindly got us from the shop.
Then we all got to work on the expanses of wandering willy and other weeds surrounding the park. Though we had weed ID sheets we soon discovered these weren't needed as EVERYTHING was a weed and needed to be removed, except for the odd tree.
We had people swinging off vines of old mans beard, and cutting off the life support of some wandering ivy. We got plenty of humourous moments from the array of rubbish found within the weeds. The majority of this was leftover bottles and cans from youth drinking sessions in the privacy of this little known park space, but there were some more interesting finds as well. Christmas tree and decorations, a pot, a mat, a bed frame, a sofa chair, a bookshelf, several individual shoes, and enough varieties of liquor bottles to rival a bar.
Despite it not having rained for days half of us ended up with muddy shoes anyway due to a spring forming a permanent swamp at the top of the park.
The last steps were to pile all of the plant remains in a pile in the corner to be covered by a council ranger and left to compost down, to pile all the rubbish in one place, and to cover the weeded area in mulch.
At the end of the day we were very happy with how much better the place was already starting to look.
