We are a volunteer community group undertaking various activities with the aim of rehabilitating Waiwhetu Stream.

Our vision is that Waiwhetu Stream is a healthy functioning ecosystem, enhance native biodiversity, cultural and amenity values, and ensure a safe and healthy environment.

Location:

Waiwhetu Stream flows along the foot of the eastern hill of Lower Hutt. It originates from various small flows above the suburb of Naenae. It flows via a concrete channel (built circa 1950's) through Naenae then opens into a more natural stream channel as it flows downsdtream through the suburbs of Fairfield, Waterloo, Waiwhetu, Gracefield and Seaview. In it's lower reaches it is tidal, discharging into the Hutt River mouth and then into Wellington Harbour. A 300 m section of Waiwhetu Stream from Seaview Rd to the Hutt River is confined within a concrete channel which was constructed in 2010 after toxic sludge from industrial activity was removed from the stream bed. The widening, deepening and channelisation of the lower section of stream is to help reduce flooding.
