Whareroa Farm Reserve: Catchment View Track Opening, Sunday, June 18, 2017
We plan an hour’s planting on Sunday, June 18 from 9am, along the beginning of Catchment View Track, and around the Marines’ Water Intake.
Then morning tea (around 10 - 10.15) followed by opening of our latest track which looks down on the upper reaches of the Whareroa Stream.
The signs were donated by Walking Access Aotearoa and the top stile by Transpower. Many thanks to these organisations.
People can go up the track (and do a loop to the Whareroa north access via Campbell’s Mill Rd) or explore the valley and go into the bush remnants – there may be some kohekohe flowering though it does not look to be one of the special flowering years.
Ten years ago, the bush areas were totally barren due to heavy grazing so it is worth a wander to see the amazing regeneration, helped by the pest trappers (over 3,500 caught since 2013).
The first flat section is shared with mountain bikers but the track is generally wide with good visibility.
Hope to see many of you on Sunday.
From the Trustees: Theo, Michael, Ann, Liffet, Sue, Ruby, Sandra, Ian and Carol.
